Itinerary:
Your journey begins at 8:00 AM when your driver meets you in the lobby of your hotel in Amman, holding a sign with your name. From there, you will set off on a two-hour drive to Umm Qais, an ancient city once known as Gadara. Part of the Decapolis, a federation of ten cities founded by Alexander the Great, Umm Qais was home to poets and philosophers and is believed to be the site of the Biblical miracle of the Gadarene swine. Upon arrival at 10:00 AM, you will have the opportunity to explore the site at your own pace or hire a local guide if available. Stroll along the Colonnaded Street, visit the ancient theater, and admire the Basilica terrace. From this elevated location, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights. The best time to visit is in spring when the surrounding hills are lush and green, adding to the beauty of the site.
After your time in Umm Qais, you will continue with a one-and-a-half-hour drive to Jerash, home to one of the most well-preserved Roman cities in the Middle East. Buried under sand for centuries before excavations began in 1925, Jerash offers a fascinating glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Rome. Unlike Umm Qais, Jerash is a more popular and touristic destination, drawing visitors eager to see its remarkable ruins. With a private guide, you will explore the city's highlights, including Hadrian’s Arch, the Hippodrome, the impressive Oval Plaza, the Cardo, the Nymphaeum, the Temple of Artemis, and the South Theatre. Walking through its streets, you will be transported back in time to an era of great architectural and cultural achievements.
As the afternoon approaches, you will begin your return journey to Amman. The drive back takes approximately one hour, giving you time to relax and reflect on the incredible historical sites you have explored throughout the day. Upon arrival in Amman, your driver will drop you off at your hotel, concluding a memorable journey through northern Jordan’s rich history and landscapes.
