The most common question we receive when someone is planning their first trip to Egypt is: “How many days do I need?” The honest answer is: 8 days is the minimum for a complete first visit, 10 days is ideal, and 14 days lets you experience Egypt without rushing a single moment. This guide gives you a complete, tested day-by-day itinerary for each duration — based on the actual travel plans we build for Egypt For Travel clients from the USA, UK, Europe, Australia and beyond.

The Classic Egypt Circuit: What Every Itinerary Is Built Around
Every great Egypt itinerary shares the same core structure — what Egyptologists call “the classic circuit”:
- Cairo (2–3 days): Pyramids of Giza · Grand Egyptian Museum · Egyptian Museum · Islamic Cairo · Khan El-Khalili bazaar · Saqqara (optional)
- Fly to Luxor (1 hour domestic flight): Embark on Nile cruise · Karnak Temple · Luxor Temple
- Nile Cruise (4 nights Luxor to Aswan): Valley of the Kings · Hatshepsut Temple · Edfu · Kom Ombo
- Aswan (1–2 days): Philae Temple · High Dam · Unfinished Obelisk · Nubian village · Abu Simbel day trip (optional)
- Return to Cairo by air (45 minutes) for international flight home
Every variation — 8 days, 10 days, 14 days — is a version of this same circuit with more or fewer days at each stop.
▶ 8-Day Egypt Itinerary 2026
Best for: Travellers with 8–9 days total. Covers all the essential sites without a single wasted day. Egypt For Travel’s 8-Day Cairo & Nile Cruise package starts from $1,349 per person.

| Day | Location | What You Do |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Cairo (arrive) | Arrival transfer to hotel · Optional: evening in Islamic Cairo or Khan El-Khalili bazaar · Rest |
| Day 2 | Cairo — Giza | Pyramids of Giza (6:00 AM start) · Great Pyramid interior (optional) · Sphinx · Valley Temple · Grand Egyptian Museum (afternoon, air-conditioned) |
| Day 3 | Cairo | Islamic Cairo: Saladin Citadel · Mohamed Ali Mosque · Khan El-Khalili · Egyptian Museum (Tahrir) · Afternoon: domestic flight Cairo → Luxor |
| Day 4 | Luxor (embark) | Embark on Nile cruise · Karnak Temple (afternoon, vast ancient complex) · Luxor Temple (evening, beautifully lit) · Sail south overnight |
| Day 5 | Luxor West Bank | Valley of the Kings (6:00 AM, 3 tombs + optional Tutankhamun) · Hatshepsut Temple · Colossi of Memnon · Sail to Edfu overnight |
| Day 6 | Edfu → Kom Ombo | Edfu Temple (best-preserved temple in Egypt, arrive by calesh) · Sail to Kom Ombo Temple (dual temple of Sobek and Horus) · Sail to Aswan overnight |
| Day 7 | Aswan | Philae Temple (motorboat island) · High Dam · Unfinished Obelisk · Nubian village felucca · Optional: Abu Simbel day trip by flight (+$250) or road (+$80) |
| Day 8 | Aswan → Home | Transfer to Aswan airport · Domestic flight Aswan → Cairo · International departure · (Or extra night in Cairo) |
What makes the 8-day itinerary work: The domestic flight from Cairo to Luxor on Day 3 is the key — it eliminates the 10-hour train journey and drops you directly into the cruise. Most first-time visitors are surprised by how much they see in 8 days when every transfer is private and efficient. The structure is: 2 days Cairo → 4 nights cruise → 1 day Aswan.
Price guide: Egypt For Travel’s 8-Day Cairo & Nile Cruise package from $1,349 per person includes all hotels, domestic flights, Nile cruise (full board), private Egyptologist guide throughout, all transfers and all entrance fees.
▶ 10-Day Egypt Itinerary 2026
Best for: First-time visitors who want to experience Egypt comfortably without rushing — and add Abu Simbel without sacrificing Saqqara or Cairo’s depth.
| Day | Location | What You Do |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Cairo (arrive) | Arrival transfer · Rest · Optional Khan El-Khalili evening visit |
| Day 2 | Cairo — Giza | Pyramids of Giza (6:00 AM) · Sphinx · Valley Temple · Grand Egyptian Museum (afternoon) |
| Day 3 | Cairo — Saqqara | Saqqara: Step Pyramid of Djoser · Pyramid Texts of Unas · Serapeum · Memphis open-air museum · Afternoon: Egyptian Museum (Tahrir) or Islamic Cairo |
| Day 4 | Cairo → Luxor (fly) | Morning: Islamic Cairo · Afternoon: fly to Luxor · Embark on Nile cruise · Luxor Temple (evening, illuminated) |
| Day 5 | Luxor East Bank | Karnak Temple (6:00 AM — Hypostyle Hall at dawn) · Rest on cruise · Afternoon sail south |
| Day 6 | Luxor West Bank | Valley of the Kings (dawn: 3 tombs + Tutankhamun) · Hatshepsut Temple · Colossi of Memnon · Medinet Habu (optional) · Sail to Edfu |
| Day 7 | Edfu → Kom Ombo | Edfu Temple (calesh arrival) · Kom Ombo Temple · Sail to Aswan overnight |
| Day 8 | Aswan | Philae Temple · High Dam · Unfinished Obelisk · Nubian village felucca at sunset · Overnight in Aswan hotel |
| Day 9 | Abu Simbel | Abu Simbel by flight (05:00 AM departure, 1 hour) · 2 hours at the temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari · Return flight to Aswan · Afternoon free in Aswan |
| Day 10 | Aswan → Home | Transfer to Aswan airport · Domestic flight to Cairo · International departure (or extra night in Cairo) |
Why the 10-day itinerary is the sweet spot: The extra 2 days over the 8-day plan buy you Saqqara (Egypt’s oldest pyramid — most visitors regret missing it), a full leisurely morning at Karnak instead of rushing, and — most importantly — Abu Simbel as a proper day trip rather than a rushed optional add-on. Abu Simbel is the single site that visitors who miss it regret most. 10 days makes it integral rather than optional.
▶ 14-Day Egypt Itinerary 2026

Practical Notes for All Egypt Itineraries
Domestic Flights in Egypt
All three itineraries use domestic flights for the Cairo–Luxor leg (1 hour, ~$60–$100 per person with EgyptAir or NileAir) and the Aswan–Cairo return (~$60–$100). Egypt For Travel arranges all domestic flights as part of the package. The flight to Luxor eliminates the 10-hour train journey and is the single most efficient investment in any Egypt itinerary.
Hotel Standards
Egypt For Travel packages include hand-picked 4-star and 5-star hotels in Cairo (near the Pyramids or downtown), 4–5 star Nile cruise ships (from $499 per person), and 4–5 star hotels in Aswan. All accommodation is private. Every guest has their own room — there is no shared dormitory format at any price point in our fleet.
Ramadan 2026 — 17 February to 18 March
If your itinerary falls during Ramadan 2026 (17 Feb – 18 Mar), all tourist sites remain open. Restaurants in tourist areas serve non-fasting visitors. The atmosphere in the evenings is uniquely festive. Discuss with Egypt For Travel when booking — we’ll advise on any site-specific adjustments for that period.
Frequently Asked Questions About Egypt Itineraries
How many days is enough for Egypt?
8 days is the minimum for a meaningful first visit to Egypt covering Cairo and the Nile cruise. With fewer than 8 days, you either miss Cairo entirely or rush the cruise. 10 days is the ideal first visit. 14 days allows you to travel slowly and add extensions. The most common mistake first-time visitors make is underestimating how much there is to see — and then wishing they had booked more time.
Is it better to start the Egypt itinerary in Cairo or Luxor?
Start in Cairo. The Pyramids are the most famous monuments in Egypt — experiencing them first creates the right psychological momentum for the trip. The Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan flows naturally southward — ending in the more relaxed city of Aswan before flying home. The reverse direction (Aswan first, Cairo last) works logistically but Cairo is an intense, busy city that benefits from being experienced early when you have energy, not at the end of 8+ days of temples.
Should Abu Simbel be included in an Egypt itinerary?
Yes — if your trip is 10 days or more. Abu Simbel is the most spectacular ancient site in Egypt outside of Giza and Karnak, and it requires a separate trip to the south of the country that the standard Luxor–Aswan cruise route does not include. The 1-hour flight from Aswan to Abu Simbel costs approximately $250 return and gives you 2 hours at the temples. For 10-day and 14-day itineraries, Abu Simbel is non-negotiable. For 8-day itineraries, it is an optional add-on from Aswan on Day 7 if your budget allows.
Can Egypt For Travel build a custom itinerary?
Yes — every itinerary Egypt For Travel produces is custom-built for the specific traveller. The day-by-day plans above are frameworks, not fixed schedules. If you want to spend an extra day at the Valley of the Kings, replace Abu Simbel with the Nubian Museum, add a felucca night on the Nile, or extend into Jordan — every element is adjustable. Contact us on WhatsApp with your travel dates, group size and interests and we will send you a complete personalised itinerary within 24 hours.
