Afternoon: Saida Zeinab Mosque — one of Cairo’s most significant religious landmarks, visited by millions of pilgrims annually. Continue to the Citadel of Saladin — the great medieval fortress built by Saladin in 1176 AD. Inside the Citadel, visit the Mohamed Ali Mosque — the iconic Ottoman twin-domed mosque with its alabaster courtyard and commanding panoramic views over Cairo. The Green Mosque within the Citadel complex. Return to hotel.

Begin at Amr Ibn El Aass Mosque — built in 641 AD, the first mosque ever constructed on the African continent. Originally built by the Arab commander who conquered Byzantine Egypt, it has been rebuilt and expanded many times but occupies the exact footprint of the first Islamic building in Africa. Visit Fustat — the first Islamic capital of Africa, founded by Amr Ibn El Aass in 641 AD, now an archaeological site revealing the foundations of the earliest Islamic city in Egypt.

Continue to Al Moez Street — a 1km UNESCO World Heritage thoroughfare that is the finest surviving collection of medieval Islamic architectural monuments in the world, including the Al-Hakim Mosque (built 990 AD), the Qalawun Complex, the El Nassir Mohamed Mosque, and the extraordinary Beit el-Suhaymi mansion. The Bab El-Futuh gates — the great 11th-century northern gates of Fatimid Cairo. Afternoon in Khan el-Khalili Bazaar — trading continuously since 1382.

After breakfast, visit Imam Shafi’i Mosque and Mausoleum — the grandest Mamluk funerary complex in Cairo, built over the tomb of Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi’i, founder of the Shafi’i school of Islamic jurisprudence. Sayeda Nafisa Mosque and Maqam — one of Cairo’s most important shrines, visited by millions of Egyptian Muslims who venerate the granddaughter of the Prophet’s grandson Hassan.

Afternoon: the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square — Tutankhamun’s golden mask, the royal mummy room, and thousands of ancient Egyptian artifacts. Omar Makram Mosque on Tahrir Square — named after the Egyptian resistance leader who opposed Napoleon’s occupation. Free time to explore Downtown Cairo. Return to hotel.

A full day of Cairo’s finest Islamic architecture. You start at the Ibn Tulun Mosque (876–879), the oldest mosque in Cairo that survives in its original form, with its vast courtyard and spiral minaret, and next door the Gayer-Anderson Museum, two Ottoman-era houses full of Islamic furniture and art.

After lunch you visit the Museum of Islamic Art, one of the world’s great collections, then the Sultan Hassan Mosque (1356–1363), a masterpiece of Mamluk architecture, and the Al-Rifai Mosque opposite, burial place of members of Egypt’s royal family and of the last Shah of Iran. Overnight in Cairo.
