Madinah is the second holiest city in Islam and the site of the Prophet’s Mosque — where the Prophet Muhammad is buried. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome in Madinah and in the streets and exterior areas of the mosque complex, though the interior of the prayer hall itself is for Muslim worshippers. Hegra — also known as Madain Saleh — is the southernmost city of the Nabataean kingdom, the same Arab civilization that built Petra in Jordan. Like Petra, Hegra was cut from the living rock of sandstone cliffs; like Petra, it served as a trading and burial center from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD; like Petra, it was abandoned after the Roman conquest of the Nabataean kingdom in 106 AD and forgotten by Western travelers until the 19th century.
