The best day trips from Cairo take you somewhere the Giza Pyramids cannot: the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, the older pyramids of Saqqara and Dahshur, the fossil whales of Fayoum, the Red Sea at Ain Sokhna, or even Luxor by morning flight. The single most important planning fact is distance: everything within about 220 km (Alexandria, Fayoum, Ain Sokhna, Saqqara) works comfortably as a private day trip by road, while anything further needs a flight or an overnight stay. By the end of this guide you will know which day trip suits your interests, the real drive times, the 2026 entrance fees, what a private trip actually costs for two people versus a group, and which popular "day trips" are not day trips at all.

Best Day Trips from Cairo: Ranked by Distance, Time and Value
Most lists of Cairo day trips put Alexandria, Luxor and the White Desert side by side as if they were equal options. They are not. A good day trip gives you at least five hours on the ground for no more than five hours of total travel, and that single rule removes several destinations immediately. We have run private day trips out of Cairo since 2010, and the table below ranks the realistic options by how much you see for the time you spend in a vehicle. All drive times assume a 07:00 or 08:00 departure from a central Cairo or Giza hotel; leaving later than 08:30 on a weekday can add 45 minutes or more in city traffic before you even reach the desert road.
If this is your first visit and you have only one spare day after Giza, choose Saqqara and Memphis for history or Alexandria for a complete change of scene. If you have two spare days, do both. Fayoum is the best choice for travellers who have already seen the pyramids and want desert landscapes, fossils and lakes instead of more temples. Luxor in a day is possible and memorable, but it is a 14-hour day with two flights, and it only makes sense if a longer Upper Egypt trip is impossible.
| Day trip | Distance and travel time | Best for | Our private tour from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saqqara, Memphis (+ Giza) | About 30 km · 45–60 min | First-time visitors, pyramid history | $60 pp (10+), $125 pp (2–3) |
| Alexandria | About 220 km · 2.5 hrs each way | Greco-Roman history, sea air, seafood | $79 pp (10+), $149 pp (2–3) |
| Fayoum (Whale Valley, Wadi El Rayan) | About 2 hrs each way | Nature, fossils, desert, families | $160 pp (10+), $200 pp (2–3) |
| Ain Sokhna (Red Sea) | About 120 km · 90 min | Beach, snorkelling, a rest day | $120 pp (10+), $250 pp (2–3) |
| Luxor by flight | 1-hour flight each way | Travellers with no time for Upper Egypt | $429 pp (10+), $529 pp (2–3) |
| Wadi El Natrun monasteries | About 100 km · 1.5 hrs | Coptic heritage, pilgrims | On request (or combined with Alexandria) |
Prices on our private day tours fall as the group grows, because the vehicle and the Egyptologist guide are shared across more people. The "from" price you see on most tour listings, ours included, is usually the 10-person rate, so a couple should look at the 2–3 person column when budgeting.
Alexandria Day Trip from Cairo: What You Can Really See in One Day
Alexandria is the most popular day trip from Cairo and the most rewarding if you plan it properly. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC and capital of Egypt under the Ptolemies and Cleopatra, it feels nothing like Cairo: a long Mediterranean Corniche, sea breezes, Greco-Roman ruins and some of the best seafood in the country. The drive is about 220 km each way by the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road, which takes around 2.5 hours with a private driver. That leaves roughly six hours in the city if you leave Cairo at 07:00 and start back at 15:30.
Six hours is enough for four headline sites and lunch, but not for everything. Our standard route is the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (the modern library built near the site of the ancient one, with its own antiquities museum), the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa (the largest Roman-period burial complex in Egypt, mixing Egyptian, Greek and Roman art underground), a seafood lunch near the harbour, and the Qaitbay Citadel, the 15th-century fortress built on the foundations of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Pompey's Pillar and the Roman Amphitheatre at Kom El Dikka are short stops that can replace the library if you prefer ruins to architecture.
| Alexandria site | Foreign adult fee 2026 | Time needed |
|---|---|---|
| Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa | About EGP 200 | 45–60 minutes |
| Qaitbay Citadel | About EGP 200 | 45–60 minutes |
| Roman Amphitheatre (Kom El Dikka) | About EGP 200 | 30–45 minutes |
| Alexandria National Museum | About EGP 200 | 45 minutes |
| Bibliotheca Alexandrina | Separate library ticket (included in our tour) | 60–90 minutes |
Two things most Alexandria guides do not tell you. First, avoid July and August weekends, when Egyptian families pour into the city for their summer holidays and the Corniche traffic can cost you an hour. Second, the Desert Road passes the Wadi El Natrun monasteries, so pilgrims and Coptic heritage travellers can add a monastery stop on the way north without a separate trip. Our full background guide to the city is in our Alexandria visitor guide, and the private trip is our Alexandria day tour from Cairo.
Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur: The Pyramid Day Beyond Giza
The closest and, for many history lovers, the best day trip from Cairo is the necropolis south of Giza. Saqqara lies about 30 km from central Cairo and is home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser, built around 2667 BC and generally regarded as the oldest large-scale cut-stone building in the world, the prototype for every pyramid that followed. Nearby Memphis, Egypt's first capital, is now a small open-air museum with the colossal fallen statue of Ramesses II and the Alabaster Sphinx. About 10 km further south, Dahshur holds the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, both built by Pharaoh Sneferu, the father of Khufu. The Red Pyramid is the first successful smooth-sided pyramid and one you can usually enter with far fewer people around you than at Giza.
The classic private itinerary combines Giza in the morning with Saqqara and Memphis in the afternoon, which is exactly how our Pyramids, Memphis and Saqqara day tour runs. If you have already seen Giza, swap it for Dahshur and you get a quieter, more atmospheric day: Saqqara, Dahshur and Memphis can all be covered between 08:00 and 15:00 with time for lunch. The 2026 foreign adult fees are EGP 600 for the Saqqara complex, EGP 200 for Memphis and EGP 200 for Dahshur, and Giza adds EGP 700 if you include it. Climbing inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu is a separate EGP 1,500 ticket with limited daily numbers.
Two practical points. Saqqara is spread out over a large desert plateau, so you will drive between the Step Pyramid, the Serapeum and the decorated tombs rather than walk. And the sites close at around 16:00 to 17:00, so a late start is the most common way to lose half this day. Read more in our guides to the Step Pyramid of Djoser and the Bent and Red Pyramids.
Fayoum Day Trip: Whale Valley, Wadi El Rayan and Desert Lakes
Fayoum is the day trip for travellers who want landscape rather than monuments. It is a fertile depression in the Western Desert, about two hours south-west of Cairo by road, and the protected areas beyond it contain some of the most unusual scenery in Egypt. The highlight is Wadi El Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, where the fossil skeletons of early whales that still had small hind legs lie exposed in the sand around 40 million years after this desert was a sea floor. A small fossil museum explains what you are seeing before you walk the marked trail between skeletons.
The rest of the day usually combines Wadi El Rayan, two desert lakes linked by small waterfalls and surrounded by dunes, with Lake Qarun for birdlife and Tunis Village, a hillside village known for its pottery workshops. Our Fayoum day tour leaves Cairo at 07:00 in a private 4WD, which is required for the desert track into Whale Valley, and returns around 17:30. Protected-area and museum entry are included in the price; lunch and pottery purchases are not.
Fayoum suits families particularly well, because children who glaze over in temples are fascinated by whale bones in the desert, and the dunes at Wadi El Rayan are good for sandboarding. The trade-off is heat: between June and September the open desert at Whale Valley is very hot by midday, so summer visits should start at dawn and finish the walking before 11:00. In winter, the protected area closes earlier in the afternoon, which is another reason to leave Cairo by 07:00.
Luxor in a Day by Flight: Is It Worth It?
Luxor is about 650 km from Cairo, far beyond a road day trip, but it is possible in a single long day by domestic flight. The flight takes about one hour each way. Our Luxor day tour from Cairo picks you up at 05:00, lands in Luxor around 07:30, and covers Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings (three tombs), the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon, with Luxor Temple added if the timetable allows, before an evening flight back and hotel drop-off around 19:00. Return flights, airport transfers, the Egyptologist and the main entrance fees are included.
Is it worth it? Honestly, only in one situation: when your trip is limited to Cairo and you would otherwise not see Upper Egypt at all, for example on a short stopover or a business trip. It costs $429 to $529 per person depending on group size, with the final price confirmed against flight availability when you book, it starts before dawn, and it gives you roughly six hours on the ground for what deserves two full days. If you can add even two nights, a 5-day Cairo and Luxor tour or a Nile cruise gives you far more for a similar daily cost, plus the option of the sunrise balloon flight. Treat Luxor-in-a-day as a last resort, not a shortcut.
| Option | Time in Luxor | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Luxor day trip by flight | About 6–7 hours | Cairo-only itineraries, stopovers |
| 5-day Cairo and Luxor tour | 2 full days | Short trips that still want Upper Egypt properly |
| Cairo plus 4-night Nile cruise | 2 days in Luxor plus Edfu, Kom Ombo, Aswan | First-time visitors with a week or more |

Ain Sokhna, Wadi El Natrun and the "Day Trips" That Are Not Day Trips
Ain Sokhna is Cairo's nearest Red Sea beach, about 120 km east and roughly 90 minutes by private car. It will not compete with Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh for coral, but as a rest day between busy sightseeing days it works well: resort day use with beach and pool, an hour's boat trip to a snorkelling spot, and lunch, returning to Cairo by early evening. Our Ain Sokhna day trip includes the private vehicle, resort day use, the boat trip and a seafood lunch; it is a relaxation day rather than a guided sightseeing tour, so there are no entrance fees to pay. Wadi El Natrun, about 100 km north-west on the Desert Road, is the other overlooked option: four historic Coptic monasteries that have been inhabited by monks since the 4th century. It is a natural half-day for Christian pilgrims and pairs with Alexandria or our Holy Family route.
Now the destinations that many websites sell as day trips but which we do not recommend doing in one day. The White Desert and Bahariya Oasis are around 370 km from Cairo, about five hours each way, so a "day trip" means ten hours in a vehicle and arriving after the best light has gone; the experience is designed around a night camping under the stars. Siwa Oasis is about 560 km away, roughly ten hours by road, and needs at least three days, which is why our 3-day Siwa Oasis tour exists. Abu Simbel from Cairo by flight is technically possible but involves connecting via Aswan, and is far better as part of an Aswan stay.
| Destination | Distance from Cairo | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| White Desert and Bahariya | About 370 km · 5 hrs each way | Minimum 1 night, ideally 2 days |
| Siwa Oasis | About 560 km · about 10 hrs | 3 to 4 days |
| Abu Simbel | Flight via Aswan | Visit from Aswan instead |
| Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh | About 450 km or a 1-hour flight | Stay at least 2 to 3 nights |
Day Trip Costs, Entrance Fees and What Other Guides Miss
The biggest surprise for independent travellers is not the price of a guide but the practicalities around it. Since 2024 most major archaeological sites in Egypt, including Giza and Saqqara, have moved to card-only ticketing, so you need a Visa or Mastercard at the gate; cash is still useful for toilets, tips, camel rides and lunch. Desert roads out of Cairo have police checkpoints, so always carry your passport, or a clear copy, on any day trip. Friday mornings are the quietest time to leave Cairo, because Friday and Saturday are the Egyptian weekend and traffic is far lighter before midday prayers.
When comparing prices, check three things: whether entrance fees are included, whether the guide is a licensed Egyptologist or only a driver, and which group size the advertised price assumes. On every private day tour we run, the guide, private air-conditioned vehicle, hotel pickup and the listed entrance fees are included, while lunch and optional extras such as the Great Pyramid interior are paid on the day. Budget US$5–10 per person for the guide's tip and US$3–5 for the driver. Our full list of site prices is in the Egypt entrance fees 2026 guide.
| Cost item | Typical 2026 figure | Included in our day tours? |
|---|---|---|
| Private Egyptologist guide and vehicle | Shared across your group | Yes |
| Listed site entrance fees | EGP 200–700 per site | Yes |
| Great Pyramid interior | EGP 1,500 | No, optional on the day |
| Lunch | About $10–20 per person | No (Ain Sokhna: yes, seafood lunch included) |
| Tips | Guide $5–10, driver $3–5 per person | No |
Finally, think about pairing. The best two-day combination for first-time visitors is Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum on one day, then Saqqara and Dahshur or Alexandria on the next. Travellers staying four or five nights in Cairo can do Giza, Saqqara, Alexandria and Fayoum without repeating anything, which is the logic behind our 5-day Cairo trip. For everything in the city itself, see our Cairo visitor guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you do Alexandria as a day trip from Cairo?
Yes. Alexandria is about 220 km from Cairo and takes around 2.5 hours each way by the Desert Road with a private driver, so a day trip leaving at 07:00 and returning around 18:00 gives roughly six hours in the city. That is enough for the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, a seafood lunch and the Qaitbay Citadel. It is not enough to see every museum, so choose four sites rather than trying to cover the whole city. Avoid July and August weekends, when summer holiday traffic on the Corniche is heavy. Trains also run between the cities, but a private car gives you far more time at the sites.
Can you visit Luxor in one day from Cairo?
Yes, by domestic flight. The flight is about one hour each way, and a typical private day trip picks you up at 05:00 and returns you to your Cairo hotel at around 19:00. In between you can see Karnak Temple, three tombs in the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon, and sometimes Luxor Temple. It is a long, tiring day that gives you only six to seven hours on the ground, and it costs considerably more than road day trips because flights are included. We recommend it only when you cannot add even two nights in Luxor or a Nile cruise to your itinerary.
How far is Fayoum from Cairo and is it worth visiting?
Fayoum is about two hours from Cairo by road, and Wadi El Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, is reached by a desert track that needs a 4WD vehicle. It is worth visiting if you enjoy landscapes and natural history: the 40-million-year-old whale fossils are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the lakes and waterfalls at Wadi El Rayan are unlike anywhere else in Egypt, and Tunis Village adds a relaxed pottery and crafts stop. It is less suitable if you only want pharaonic monuments. Between June and September, start at dawn, because the open desert becomes very hot by late morning and there is little shade.
Can you do the White Desert as a day trip from Cairo?
Technically yes, but we do not recommend it. The White Desert lies beyond Bahariya Oasis, about 370 km from Cairo, which means roughly five hours of driving each way and around ten hours in a vehicle in a single day. You would arrive in the middle of the day, when the famous chalk formations look flat and white in the harsh light, and leave before sunset, which is the reason most people go. The experience is designed around an overnight desert camp, with sunset, a campfire dinner and sunrise among the rock formations. Plan at least one night, ideally two days, rather than a day trip.
